Dear Sir/Madam,

With just over 2 weeks to go and the weather heating up, Spring must be just around the corner.  Bring it on and an end to the violent storms this Winter has delivered (I hope).

We are certainly in 'interesting' times.  The world seems to have gone nuts!  In recent months we've had market panic off the back of 'Brexit' and then immediately afterwards we had market greed when investors worked out that Brexit was not so important after all. We've had a world thrust into deeper fears of imminent danger with the Nice, France terrorist attacks and then again in Munich, Germany and soon after that more violence in the USA.

Australian federal elections were held in the middle of that mess which led to another hung parliament result and Pauline Hanson's decisive entry into the Senate with 4 seats.  And to top it all off we have the madness of the US elections coming in November and the emergence of the highly controversial Donald Trump.  Heaven help us if he gets in!!

Fear has gripped the world.  You can see it in the media, political elections, market movements, in our daily lives and in global economies. Thank goodness that we have the olympic games to provide some welcome relief for a couple of weeks!

Interest rates around the world are at zero and some are even negative!  Yes it actually costs you money in some countries to put money in the bank. Weird times.  In Australia interest rates were reduced to 1.5% recently, on 2 August 2016 and we believe they may go even lower.  Australia's 1.5% rates are some of the highest in the world at present!  Needless to say, the world economies are growing slowly or not at all.

In this environment profit is hard to come by, confidence falls and spending slows.  We also expect property prices to begin to fall, up to 30%, particularly in parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane.  Perth is already heavily off.  So modest positive returns from your investments are what we expect.  Even in depressed economic climates, opportunities do exist for your fund managers but they are very much earning their keep at the moment.  Fortunately the Chrysalis portfolios all continue to be some of the highest relative returns being received which we are pleased with.
